Levelling ramps for sleeping in our Model Y

Uluru via Stuart Highway 2025

With the rear seats folded, the back of our Model Y is almost a bed. Almost, because the seats don't fold flat. The floor slopes down towards the boot, so whoever sleeps on it slowly slides towards the tailgate.

So, on the first afternoon of our Uluru trip, we stopped at Supercheap Auto in Ballarat and bought a pair of SCA Caravan Levellers for $49.99. They're yellow plastic ramps with three steps, 40, 70 and 100 mm high. We drove the rear wheels up onto them, to lift the back of the car and take some of the slope out of the bed.

We used them on both of our car camping nights:

  • Coober Pedy, July 29, on a powered site at the BIG4 Stuart Range Outback Resort
  • Yulara, August 1, in the unpowered overflow area of Ayers Rock Campground

At Coober Pedy, we tried backing up a rise first, then gave in and used the levellers. They helped, but the bed still sloped back more than we liked. So, at Yulara, we used both: the levellers and a small rise. We also filled in a couple of holes left by previous campers, with our folding spade.

Our Snuuzu mattress smooths out the kink where the seats fold, but not the slope. For the Snowy Mountains trip in December 2025, I took our Teraglide Pro platform instead. It makes a flat, level floor over the folded seats, with no ramps.

How do you level your car for a night's sleep?

    1. Matt Campbell Yeah, the Teraglide has been great. Really neat extendable table and kitchen. Nice flat platform for the bed. Bit high to get into but fine with a portable stool, if you are mobile. See my photos on my last trip through the Snowy Mountains, linked above via the Teraglide post.

  3. I did the ramp, it does help! But just take time to set up and it uses some space. So later we change to have a non fix bed frame.
